Immunohistochemistry
Immunohistochemistry or IHC is the process whereby specific proteins within cells are stained, enabling a pathologist to visualize these proteins, which are otherwise not detectable with the naked eye. The amount of protein present as well as the protein’s localization in a given cell type is often altered in disease states, and a pathologist can interpret these changes to aid in disease diagnosis and prognosis and to inform treatment strategies.
