Surgical Patology
Surgical pathology involves the study of tissues to help diagnose a disease and determine a treatment plan. The tissues are either acquired by biopsy (a small representative piece of tissue) or surgical removal from the patient’s body.
Once in the lab, the tissue is then processed using special techniques and examined by a Pathologist under a microscope to:
Identify infectious agents; Detect early changes which may result in cancer; Distinguish between benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous); Evaluate prognostic indicators present in the tissue
