Familial Cancer

Most cases of cancer are sporadic – this means they have occurred due to lifestyle, age, or environmental exposure. However, some people are more likely to develop cancer because of an inherited genetic mutation. For example, on average 1 in 10 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but 8 out of 10 women with a BRCA1 mutation will develop the disease. Cancers which can be inherited include breast, colorectal, stomach, pancreatic, endometrial or uterine, ovarian, melanoma, and more.

 

Genetic Testing is available for:

  • Patients with cancer, whose physician is concerned their cancer might be due to an inherited genetic mutation;
  • People who have a family history of certain types of cance;
  • People who are concerned about inherited cancer and would like to know their risk

Our testing involves providing a saliva sample, or in some cases a blood test, and providing information on your personal and family history of cancer. Results are available in 3-4 weeks.

As with any genetic test, it is important to consider the implications of testing for you and your family, and that you have an opportunity to discuss and fully understand the results.
